Woman's Social Advancement. |

We increasingly see more women
succeed, especially in the
world of sports such as the
Olympics and golf. I think this
is a result of efforts made by
women with potentials in the
merit based world of sports.
The same can be said for the
world of literature and arts.
However, the same
seems to be difficult in the
world of business. Even
corporate career women at
foreign companies which are
known for their merit based
system often complain to me
that their abilities are not
adequately evaluated and that
their companies do not offer
positions in which they can
prove themselves.
In
politics and business, one
needs to stand out above an
intricate web of personal
relationships and
organizations. There are female
politicians and business
executives who are highly
regarded. However, would I be
condemned to say that I feel
many of these women became
successful by defeminizing?
With some exceptions such
as the former British Prime
Minister Margaret Hilda
Thatcher – The Iron Woman, it
would be truly unfortunate if
women needed to divest of their
feminine traits in order to
climb a corporate ladder. I
believe the root cause of such
misfortune is the mentality
held by men and a system
created based on a
male-dominated society.
There must have been many
incidents where companies had
experienced losses because they
could not utilize abilities
unique to women which these
women intentionally surrendered
during the process of breaking
through a barrier created by
male-dominated corporate
society.
Recent
scientific findings have
revealed that structure of
brains cells greatly differs
between men and women.
Difference in bodily strength
is also striking. Women bear
handicaps such as childbirth,
child-rearing and housekeeping
chores. In short, we need to
create a new system which takes
into account structural
differences between men and
women and the handicaps born by
women. And in order to create
such a system, men need to
change their mentality.
I believe that women with
higher education, needs for
more income to maintain quality
of life, and other developments
have made women’s social
advancement an inevitable
trend. Rather, I believe that
companies that cannot utilize
female capabilities will not be
able to survive much longer.
An increasing number
of young people remain
unmarried. One of the reasons
for this trend is that, I
think, people do not regard
marriage as an idealistic life
style because they cannot feel
masculinity or femininity
towards their opposite sex.
Masculinity and femininity are
increasingly lost because
current society needs less of
masculinity or femininity in
people, as a result of heavily
emphasizing intelligence as an
important human quality.
Many of soldiers who
fought during the World War II
allegedly died while crying out
“Mother!” Why did they not
scream “Father!”? I must say
feminine loving compassion must
have had deeply embraced these
dying young soldiers’ souls.
Women would stand on
guard if we tried to measure
them with man-dominated
society’s ruler. We need a
different kind of ruler in
order to capitalize on female
abilities. I strongly hope for
creation of a new kind of
society in which people can
feel equally treated without
losing masculine or feminine
traits.
